Carlos Teixeira from ORGE Innovation Consulting and Parsons The New School for Design presented "Enterprising Design Strategies: From Closed to Open Innovation," a course administered through Hong Kong Institute of Design Knowledge. The course aimed to teach private sector leaders, company executives, and entrepreneurs techniques for company culture change, principles of lean production and open innovation, alternate development strategies, and engaging creative clusters to push business forward.
Leadership Mentoring
Through the curriculum, participants learned new design and open innovation techniques in a safe, teamwork-based multidisciplinary environment where they were able to learn not only from the course but through working with each other on innovation workshop activities.
Innovation Capacity Building
Industry leaders were challenged to analyze the way their businesses were currently functioning, what new methodologies in the industry were, and taught to rethink their company processes and structure by incorporating the new concepts.
Knowledge Brokering
Participants learned how to apply industry knowledge, company findings, and their own personal experience to guide themselves through the reframing and reimagination of their workplaces.
Design Strategies
Design strategies were not only used to design the teaching materials, but also taught to participants through outlined learnings, case studies, and activities.
Project Framing
The concept of being able to redesign existing structures and processes from a lean, open innovation, and design-based viewpoint was introduced to participants leading organizations facing the challenge of being continuously innovative.
Workshop Structure
Innovation Process Mapping
The present people/departments, information communication technology, space, and innovation flows in the participants' organizations were described though value web creation, image sorting, and other visualization and organization techniques.
Lean Ideation Principles
As the course progressed, cards were given to participants so that lean ideation principles and case study examples could be recorded and used further within and outside of the course.
Innovation Process Redesign
Participants selectively incorporated the learned lean ideation principles in their current innovation and business structure to design improvements into their organizations.
Open Innovation Strategic Planning
An action plan was designed by each business leader for the implementation of each new design, tailored to the process and structure of their own organizations.
MVP Game
A game was created to teach the concept of the MVP as well as the difference in strategies in incorporating designers in various steps of the product creation process.
Role-Specific Tasks
Workshop Production
In this role I was in charge of the innovation workshop design, materials creation, and managed the budget for the costs of the materials involved in the innovation workshop portion of the course.
Workshop Design
Working closely with the guest speaker Carlos, we structured the full course curriculum and set the strategy for the innovation workshop. Once the main themes were identified, I created a series of workshop activities to blend the different key concepts and case study material taught in the course. The workshop activities were designed in modules according to a buildable flow, where previous learnings were inserted and revisited as the course progressed.
Workshop Materials Creation
The workshop materials were designed by me through sketched wireframes and using Adobe Illustrator. A complete package was created for each individual participant for easy transportation and intuitive use, unlike our other innovation workshops which are in a larger-scale group format and managed by trained facilitators.
